Ever wonder how photography is priced?
Custom photography. Custom photography involves hiring a professional photographer. The pros are that you, the client, gets the exact images you need at the right size. The consideration here is that the cost is often higher. We have a number of trusted and qualified photographers on call.
Stock photography. Stock photos generally fall into two main categories: Rights Managed and Royalty Free.
-
Rights managed images are those that are purchased for one-time use under strict guidelines set by the stock photo company. These images are high quality in every way, including uniqueness, which is why they have a higher price tag. A sample price for an image that will be printed at an average size in a brochure with a quantity of 2,500 can range from $700 to $1000 and up for a one-time use.
Royalty free images are those with unlimited usage rights once they have been purchased. They are generally more ordinary and therefore cost less. West Packard stays current with new photo companies and trends and tries to find the best of the “ordinary” images. Prices for these images can range from as little as $80 (for a low resolution file for offset printing at approximately 2” x 3”) to $500 for a higher resolution image printing at 8” x 10”. Recent searches for brochure sized images have resulted in the $400 range. Another consideration in choosing royalty free images is that if you can purchase it, so can anyone else. “Your” image could end up on a competitor’s brochure.
There are subscription services to royalty free stock photo companies that one can purchase for a period of one month to six months or more. We have seen “sales” for these services at $200 per month that provide unlimited downloads to every image on their site. Be prepared for some frustration with this though, as the images can tend to look dated and are cropped so tightly that the designer has little to work with. Please understand there can be exceptions for any of these scenarios.
Some clients opt for custom photography which bypasses a lot of the stock photo challenges, albeit sometimes in trade for other challenges. We always strive to find the “optimum” solution for the project at hand.
